متن کاملResolved-sideband Raman cooling of a bound atom to the 3D zero-point energy.
We report laser-cooling of a single Be ion held in a rf (Paul) ion trap to where it occupies 9 + the quantum-mechanical ground state of motion. With the use of resolved-sideband stimulatedRaman cooling, the zero-point of motion is achieved 98% of the time in 1-D and 92% of the time in 3-D. Cooling to the zero-point energy appears to be a crucial prerequisite for future experiments such as the r...
متن کاملBeyond optical molasses: 3D raman sideband cooling of atomic cesium to high phase-space density
We demonstrate a simple, general purpose method to cool neutral atoms. A sample containing 3x10(8) cesium atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap is cooled and simultaneously spin polarized in 10 ms at a density of 1.1x10(11) cm (-3) to a phase space density nlambda(3)(dB) = 1/500, which is almost 3 orders of magnitude higher than attainable in free space with optical molasses. The technique i...
متن کاملSideband Cooling Beyond the Quantum Limit with Squeezed Light
Quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic vacuum produce measurable physical effects such as Casimir forces and the Lamb shift [1]. Similarly, these fluctuations also impose an observable quantum limit to the lowest temperatures that can be reached with conventional laser cooling techniques [2, 3]. As laser cooling experiments continue to bring massive mechanical systems to unprecedented temp...
متن کاملCavity sideband cooling of a single trapped ion.
We report a demonstration and quantitative characterization of one-dimensional cavity cooling of a single trapped (88)Sr(+) ion in the resolved-sideband regime. We measure the spectrum of cavity transitions, the rates of cavity heating and cooling, and the steady-state cooling limit. The cavity cooling dynamics and cooling limit of 22.5(3) motional quanta, limited by the moderate coupling betwe...
